The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Track

This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed an exciting opening credits. It showcases the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.

Overall, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the song choice.

This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition composed by artist the talented musician. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one put out by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the excitement and energy that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when cast member the performer wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.

The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, the creators has already said that the series will have some changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.

This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
