Throughout a large portion of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned inside a mental fortress built from the past of the villain Henry. The search for a way out in the pivotal sixth episode has them witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's early years—a moment that potentially carries the secret to his downfall once and for all.

Heads Up: The following reveals crucial plot points for *Stranger Things* season 5, volume 2.

A Journey Into the Mine Shaft

After locating Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a cave that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a viewing device taken from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view with the shape, she and Max plummet into a deep mine shaft.

They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the act wasn't just a fight for life.

Similar to other plot points this season, the full story behind the encounter originates in the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a warship into a plane later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the captain, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

This man's son, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to hand over to the Soviets, who were keen to start their parallel research. This spy in the tunnel is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Based on what is known about the doctor's experiments, the container almost certainly contained samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon handling the contents, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—powers he would inadvertently transfer to the children under Brenner's care.

Alternatively, the container could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later fundamentally changed. As a youth, he struggles with the whispers of a sinister presence, much like how the character Will was influenced by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

His lasting fear linked to that memory shows how deeply scarring the incident was for him. While he commands the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him still exists. Fear is his tool, and the series is building toward a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has overcome his greatest terrors to gain strength.

This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now understands what Vecna himself fears, which could provide a decisive edge in the ultimate battle to come.
