Rob Edwards and O'Neil are two of the initial candidates in the frame to succeed the former manager as manager of Wolves.
The previous coach was dismissed on the weekend following the squad's ten-game winless start to the Premier League season.
Furthermore Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have historic associations to the team - are part of the options to be evaluated by the Wolves leadership.
The manager is currently at another club, which would create a potential obstacle to his hiring at Wolves' stadium.
Nevertheless the ex- Luton head coach - who made more than 100 of appearances for the club during his playing career - is said to be a leading contender for the position.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys backing from the club board as they start the search of appointing a fresh head coach.
O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise contender, even though he would be a surprising appointment considering he was released by Wolves in December last year.
The former West Ham player is currently unemployed which means Wolves would not need to pay any buyout fee.
