Miami Heat and Trail Blazers Claim Initial Wins Following Player Arrests

NBA game action

Miami put up 86 opening half points against the Grizzlies

The Heat secured a overwhelming 146 to 114 win over the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial basketball game since guard Rozier was detained for suspected unlawful gambling.

Portland Trail Blazers head coach Billups was also detained in connection with a broad federal investigation into illegal gambling. The two individuals deny the allegations.

However, the Heat were focused as they put up 86 first-half scores to lead the Grizzlies by thirty-nine after two quarters, the largest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37-year history.

Bam Adebayo top-scored with twenty-four scores and afterwards said Terry had the support of the team.

"We support him. Full support," Adebayo stated. "You support him through and through. He's like family at the end of the day."

Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra added: "Rozier is a person who is important to all of us. He has made a real positive impact on our locker room.

"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he goes through the situation."

Portland also secured their first game after the detentions, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Billups' absence and guiding the team to a decisive 139 to 119 victory against the Warriors.

"Everyone experienced positive times with Billups and his coaching style," Splitter said. "Our thoughts are with him and his loved ones but our focus is on the game."

League Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' by Recent Events

Addressing the arrests for the initial occasion, NBA commissioner Adam Silver stated he was "very upset" by the events of the past few days.

"Nothing is more critical to the league and supporters than the fairness of the game," he told a broadcaster. "Therefore I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."

Silver also mentioned an league probe into the player's actions in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he participated for the Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"We were informed by the authorities and the betting companies," he added.

"We then looked into that situation and were open about it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, honestly, found no evidence.

"The federal government has subpoena power... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the NBA is unable to.

"Therefore, we've been working with them since then. Naturally, what they revealed recently was an charge.

"And two and a half years later, he still hasn't been convicted of any offense, in justice to Rozier.

"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been suspended, and so it is a balance in this case between upholding rights and investigating."
