Hamilton Island, a Popular Queensland Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Acquired by American Investment Giant.
A major resort island situated within the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based investment group in a deal said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to build on the vision and dedication that the Oatley family has established in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
The Reported Sale
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family, pending standard regulatory approvals.
The sellers issued a comment noting they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island covers over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the area is built upon, including a significant array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 dining and drinking venues
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
The resort is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a wide network of local partners, vendors, and local businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The late Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
The island's development boom first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and modest accommodations that housed domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and southern states.
Broader Portfolio and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in multiple nations, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
