‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s journey from rehabilitation to goals with Athletic Bilbao

Thehe debut appearance the Spanish forward played in the UK, an young appearing for Athletic Bilbao B against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at the English ground in September 2015, he scored. During his subsequent match he played in British turf, against the English side weeks after, he scored. Another occasion, against the Citizens six weeks after that, sure enough, he scored again. Upon his comeback to the northwest to face United at Leigh’s ground in the 2017 season, he found the back of the net. It was a superb volley, as well. “In fact,” he says, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve ever scored.” Therefore the team did what was necessary: they took him off.

“I got well angry,” the attacker reveals, then chuckling. “Probably there’s a recording. We traveled to face United and I was in fine form. They kept me out of the final 45 minutes: I was without a signed my contract, goals were flowing, there were lots of rumours, it’s typical. I’m unsure regarding Newcastle being interested, but I came across reports about Man United, standard transfer gossip. It’s unclear if it was accurate, but supposing an offer came, my desire was to remain at Bilbao. I feel lucky to be here.”

Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash

At the facility, Bilbao, the morning session is set to begin; following that, the quick travel to Loiu airport and another trip to England, on this occasion to play Newcastle in the European elite competition on midweek. Mentioning that phrase makes Guruzeta smile. It has become a tough year for the team, due in part to the pressures of their participation. Defeated late on in the weekend clash, they have managed just one win of their last eight matches and been defeated by Arsenal and Dortmund in the continental stage. However, take in the big picture, the major occasions he’s experienced and future challenges, and he feels a calm gratitude within him.

In the three years since he had rejoined the team, Guruzeta has been a Europa League semi-finalist, denied at the last hurdle the showpiece event by the English giants, and has traveled on a traditional boat through the waterway surrounded by a million fans after lifting the trophy, the club’s first trophy in 40 years. Now he is the club’s leading marksman in the UCL, where they are countercultural and returning after absence in a decade. “I never imagined this,” he admits.

The player believed it difficult enough just to break into the senior squad and his assessment was correct. Born to the former Real Sociedad player Xabi Guruzeta and a regular attendee at the opposition side, Gorka is from the Antiguoko academy, the San Sebastián club that produced Mikel Arteta, the former star and the Bournemouth manager. He joined Athletic at 17 but after his first-team bow in that summer, he suffered a torn cruciate, being released, a drop in category and a return before he could truly get a chance, coming back aged 26 to enjoy the highlights of their lives.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta gets ready to play Newcastle in the UCL.

“Joining the setup doubting you’ll make the first team but each step you advance through you’re remaining and you can observe the approach. You make it and … you have to leave.” He had limited game time in half a dozen appearances between his first game and that period. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances at that level and my knee gave way.

“A massive setback but I reflect on it as a turning point because it forced me to alter the outlook. The rehabilitation process is hard, but it aids growth. You cultivate routines you didn’t have. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I would go to training and then return home, like when you’re a kid. At Lezama, all resources are available, so take full advantage. Work, precaution. Hit the weights. Should your hips be uneven, correct it. If your ankles are a 10, improve it more. Every small aspect: perform them.

“Among professionals you’re going to collide with opponents who have been in battles countless occasions. Extremely powerful. Seeing previous pictures: my physique was slight. Injuries are inevitable. Current photos and the improvement is clear. The setback taught me. Sessions end, but there’s more to do. Peers are prepared, really ready; no exceptions.”

You also have to play. He left upset in that year, at 23 years old, dropping into the second division. With Sabadell in 2020-21, he netted three goals in forty appearances. At Amorebieta in the following period, the goals started to flow. “It’s a common path: loans, terminated contracts. If you turn it round, dedication, confidence, and should the time come a vacancy arises where you play, a return could happen. Preparation is key. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. To then win the Copa del Rey, compete continentally, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”

Little surprise he states this is to be enjoyed. Particularly after last year which, sometimes, was involved suffering. Previously the main threat with sixteen goals, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
