Ceramic Gift, Anyone? Italy's PM to Sell International Gifts for Good Cause
Getting rid of undesired offerings can be seen as slightly impolite – unless it's done the right way.
A Philanthropic Clear-Out
The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction a reported 270 items bestowed upon her by international figures while abroad. This unusual assortment is said to contain gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.
The collection, collectively, are valued at around €800,000. They will be put up for sale via competitive bidding by a Rome-based auction firm. An exact timeline has not been finalized, although the aim is to hold the auction by year's end, with the proceeds benefiting a selection of charitable causes.
Palazzo Chigi Treasures
The items reportedly stored in a storage room on the upper level of Palazzo Chigi. It has been reported that Meloni is also planning to auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been sitting unused indefinitely.
A complete inventory is yet to be officially released, but a glimpse emerged earlier this year when a comprehensive document of all declared gifts was reviewed by officials. The query focused on if a rule restricting expensive presents was being honored. According to regulation, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents exceeding €300.
An International Array of Gifts
Notable gifts feature:
- A scarf from the leader of Albania, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A sari from Kerala from India's prime minister.
- A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
- A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
- A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
- A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
- Artworks from Moldova.
- An assortment including makeup, a board, and numerous carpets from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Perhaps the strangest gifts were the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," reports suggest.
Diplomatic Backdrop
The prime minister has received praise, particularly from within her party, with winning over international counterparts and positioning Italy as a prominent force on the global scene once again.
The forthcoming sale symbolizes a distinct method to deal with the protocol gifts that build up during a time in office.
