Books I Didn't Complete Reading Are Stacking by My Bed. Is It Possible That's a Positive Sign?
This is slightly uncomfortable to reveal, but let me explain. A handful of titles wait beside my bed, each only partly consumed. Inside my phone, I'm some distance through thirty-six audio novels, which pales next to the 46 ebooks I've left unfinished on my digital device. That fails to include the expanding collection of advance editions beside my coffee table, vying for blurbs, now that I am a established writer in my own right.
Starting with Persistent Completion to Purposeful Abandonment
On the surface, these figures might appear to support contemporary opinions about current attention spans. An author observed recently how easy it is to lose a person's concentration when it is divided by social media and the 24-hour news. However at what other moment in history have we ever had such instant access to so many amazing works of art, anytime we want? A surplus of riches greets me in each bookshop and behind any device, and I strive to be deliberate about where I direct my time. Could “DNF-ing” a novel (term in the book world for Did Not Finish) be rather than a indication of a weak mind, but a thoughtful one?
Reading for Empathy and Reflection
