Arnaud Kalimuendo Strikes as Forest Secure Nostalgic Triumph Against Malmö

“Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that,” echoed around the City Ground as Forest followers celebrated a further success against their Swedish opponents. Much has happened since Francis's decisive header secured the European Cup in 1979, but the club continue to hold dear those glorious moments. Equally, major changes have occurred in the weeks since Sean Dyche assumed control, with Forest appearing reinvigorated and earning a convincing win courtesy of goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, and Milenkovic, enhancing their prospects of progressing in the Europa League.

Building Momentum with Third Straight Victory

For Nottingham Forest, this performance – against a Malmö side that had not played for nearly a month after finishing in sixth place in their domestic league – represented a third straight win across every tournament and further built on the momentum generated from last weekend’s success at Liverpool. While this match was a reminder of Forest’s European Cup success in name, the encounter itself was devoid of any significant jeopardy or nerves.

It proved to be an occasion filled with nostalgia, an longed-for reunion and the third competitive meeting between the teams since the showpiece event 46 years ago.

The home side fully embraced the heritage, paying tribute to the heroes of that era by giving them, along with their Malmö counterparts, the VIP welcome. Thirteen members of the Malmö's team from that time were also in attendance. The two clubs enjoyed a dinner together before the match. Frank Clark, Colin Barrett and company were given a rousing reception when they gathered on the pitch a quarter of an hour before the start, and a typically impressive display was shown in the home stand.

Recalling History

“30th May 1979, John Robertson crossed it in from the left flank,” read half of a large tifo, in capital letters. While no one required a reminder of what ensued, the remaining section was unfurled as the squads emerged from the dressing rooms. “And there’s Francis,” it continued. Another stunning tifo depicted Brian Clough observing events beside his assistant Taylor on a bench at the Olympiastadion.

Control from the Start

So, Forest had soaked up those wonderful recollections, but what about the showing on the night? It was impressive, as well. They were in full command from the moment Kalimuendo fired an effort wide inside two minutes and built a 2-0 lead by the break. Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Zach Abbott, on his first European start, tried his luck.

It felt fitting that Ryan Yates, who joined Forest as an eight-year-old, made the initial breakthrough in the Malmö defence captained by their own academy product captain, Pontus Jansson, formerly of Leeds United and Brentford. The Forest centre-back Milenkovic saw a delivery deflect off a opponent and into the path of Yates, who finished right-footed from just inside the penalty area to register his maiden strike since March.

Second Strike Seals Dominance

Yates was involved in the team's second goal on the brink of the interval, too, his free header parried by the goalkeeper Ellborg but Kalimuendo on hand to convert the rebound from point-blank range. McAtee, the midfielder given a rare start and only his second outing since the autumn, was the catalyst, chipping a delicious ball towards his teammate at the far post.

Just moments before, Hudson-Odoi’s low effort was deflected aside off Malmö back Rösler, the son of former Man City forward Uwe Rösler, and an free Milenkovic also previously had a powerful header smartly repelled by Ellborg, who returned in place of the ex- Villa goalie Olsen.

Malmö’s Difficulties

This was Malmö’s initial game since the domestic league concluded on 9 November, and they struggled to match the home team's energy. The Reds made it 3-0 when the defender scored after his defensive colleague Murillo kept alive a corner. The captain had a shot blocked, but the Serbia defender Milenkovic feasted on the leftovers.

The home side then pushed for more, with Hudson-Odoi dinking a right-foot shot on to the bar before Sangaré sent an optimistic shot off target from distance. It was that kind of nights. Dyche, aware of Sunday’s domestic fixture here against Brighton, made seven changes from the side that surprised the Reds at Anfield last weekend, when they additionally netted three goals, though he introduced Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and Igor Jesus during the final period.

Hiccup-Free Night for the Team

It proved a flawless night for Forest. Dyche could withdraw the defender with the match long since sewn up and subsequently brought on teenage full-back Sinclair for his first-team debut. Dyche discussed the club legends supplying “bits of gold” at weekly get-togethers and, almost five decades on, the current crop showed they are able of a few nuggets of thrills, too.
